Education Opportunities at Tacoma Art Museum – Our April Platinum Sponsor

Letter from the President
Dear ArtsEd Washington friends and members,

How did it get to be the end of April? Didn’t we just finish with the holidays? And now we’re looking ahead to the end of another school year. May is that incredible month when all of us working in schools sprint to connect those last bits of learning and projects and big ideas with our students. I am always amazed at the sheer volume of arts that we produce with our students in this month alone. Not wanting to be out-done, ArtsEdWashington joins in the fun with our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 15 (Meeting details and how to RSVP are below).

As part of the statewide activities that week, our Annual Meeting features a state level forum on arts education entitled Making it Real. Marcie Sillman, from KUOW, will moderate a panel of state level decision-makers who will talk about how our state legislature, Board of Education and education agency are building momentum to advance the arts so that every child in Washington State has access to the best possible education, one in which the arts are fully integrated into the regular curriculum.

This panel discussion and this particular theme would not have been possible three years ago, but the public expectation is changing and schools and communities, beleaguered by several years of "No Child Left Behind", are turning to the arts to put the creativity back into teaching and learning. We all know it’s true: you cannot define a good education without the arts. Collectively, we are spreading this truth far and wide. We keep building on the foundation created by many, many arts advocates over many, many years. Our meeting should be the biggest and best in our recent past, but not without YOU, so please plan to attend—to celebrate our achievements and keep the momentum going.

Incidentally, it's not just here in Washington that ArtsEd WA is having an impact. Our ED, Una McAlinden, has recently been elected to serve on the National Leadership Committee of the Kennedy Center's Alliances for Arts Education Network, our parent organization. We always knew she was a gem—and now the whole country is getting a glimpse. In addition, AnnRene' Joseph and two visual arts educators from the state were recently recognized by the National Arts Educators Association. (Details in enews below)

Together, we are "making it real", so join us! Be part of the collective voice for arts education in Washington State by becoming a member today. http://www.artsedwashington.org/

Have a great spring—and don’t forget to breath and drink lots of water. There’s lots of artful work to be done.

See you at the annual meeting,

Andrea Allen
Board President

ArtsEd Washington Update & Arts Education Week Activities

"Making it Real" - ArtsEd Washington's Annual Meeting, Tuesday May 15th at Seattle Rep's Leo K Theatre
We know the arts should be part of a complete education for all of Washington State's students. So, how will it become a reality?

Attend ArtsEd Washington’s Annual Meeting and learn how OSPI, the State Board of Education and the state legislature are working together to help make arts education a reality in schools and districts across the state. KUOW's Marcie Sillman will moderate a conversation on arts education between Senator Rosemary McAuliffe, Chair of the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee; Eric Liu, author, educator and member of the State Board of Education; and, from OSPI, Dr. Andy Griffin, Assistant Superintendent for Higher Education and Certification on behalf of Dr. Terry Bergeson.

The evening's program will include a silent auction and refreshments. This event is free but reservations are required. Please let us know you will be attending by contacting 206-441 4501 or associate@artsedwashington.org by May 7, 2007.

Every Child. More Arts. Arts Education Week is May 14-20, 2007
ArtsEd Washington wants to help you celebrate Washington’s 2nd Annual Arts Education Week! Governor Gregoire has proclaimed that May 14-20th 2007 is Arts Education Week. This is an important opportunity to raise the profile of arts education in Washington State. Collectively, we can raise awareness about the value of arts education and help ensure the arts are part of a complete education for all.

We invite you to use the new Arts Education Week toolkit on our newly redesigned website to find the ways that you can participate. http://www.artsedwashington.org/Frame_Programs.html?http://www.artsedwashington.org/Programs/ArtsEdWeek.html

Browse the toolkit for detailed information about Arts Education Week, a PDF of the governor’s proclamation, and the Arts Education Week logo that is available for everyone’s use. In fact, download the logo and link to the toolkit from your website!

Arts Leadership Program Update - Looking for a Few Great Instructional Leaders!
As April comes to a close, we are moving into high gear to recruit the principal leaders for next year's program enrollment. If you have spent the last few years wondering when you'll have a chance to get to the arts - the time is now! This program provides the vehicle to enable you and your teachers to intentionally plan to include the arts, engage your community in the effort and enhance teaching and learning in your school. But don't just take our word for it! Click the Principals' Program link on our homepage to see the other schools that have been participating. Maybe you know the principals in some of these schools - give one of them a call or email info@artsedwashington.org for more information.

Our participating principals are our best advertisement. Read about the arts teaching and learning taking place at this month's featured school - Carnation Elementary in Riverview School District. http://www.rivercurrentnews.com/paper/RCN-46/RCN46_WEB.pdf

Our Executive Director, Una McAlinden, also interviewed Principal Doug Poage for a special Arts Education Week feature in Inside Encore, in theatres around the Puget Sound area this month. Read it here http://www.encoremediagroup.com/arts_coalition/IE_Apr.pdf

Barnes & Noble Bookfair, May 18-20th, 2007 during Arts Education Week
Community partner, Barnes & Noble, is hosting a bookfair and other in-store events in several Puget Sound area stores to support ArtsEd Washington and our work to ensure that the arts are part of a complete education for all our state’s students.

When you present one of the downloadable ArtsEd Washington voucher at the time of purchase, a percentage of the sale goes directly to supporting the work we are doing. This amount will be between 10-20% depending on the total sales. This is an easy and exciting way to support arts education for all Washington students while treating yourself to a great read!

Participating locations: Alderwood; Downtown Bellevue; Downtown Seattle (Pacific Place); Issaquah; Silverdale; Southcenter; University Village; West Seattle; Woodinville. All these stores will be marking Arts Education Week with special book displays and information about ArtsEd Washington, with special storydrama activites from our partner Seattle Children's Theatre at Alderwood, Southcenter, Pacific Place and West Seattle.

Download the multistore voucher from our homepage http://www.artsedwashington.org/Documents/ArtsEd%20Week%20Multi%20Voucher.pdf and mark your calendars to shop for books that weekend and show your support for ArtsEd Washington!

Our deepest gratitude to Tacoma Art Museum
Earlier this year, Tacoma Art Museum hosted our Arts Planning Workshop, a full day event attended by the Arts Teams from all our planning schools. Over 60 educators and community members from schools across King, Pierce and Kitsap began their planning process and worked to identify how they will include the arts in their school communities. We'll keep you posted on their progress with a featured school in each eNews issue.

April Updates from Washington State Arts Commission / Arts in Education Program:

• Washington State will soon have a Poet Laureate – a person who, through poetry will support the state’s efforts to boost literacy. The poet laureate bill passed out of both the House and Senate with overwhelming support, and was signed into law by the Governor at a ceremony in the Legislative building on April 19, 2007. WSAC will establish and administer the poet laureate program, with the support of two important partner organizations: Humanities Washington and the Washington Poets Association.

• WSAC Arts in Education grant applications are currently in the review process; recipients of the Community Consortium and First Step grants will be announced during Arts Education Week, after they are approved by the Commission on May 15.

• The postmark deadline for applications for the Roster of Teaching Artists is just days away, on May 1. We are anticipating a good turnout in the application process, and are looking forward to presenting a strong pool of teaching artists on this updated roster. • Congratulations to the winner of Washington State’s Poetry Out Loud program: Olivia Seward, a 9th grader at Stadium High School in Tacoma. She’ll be representing our state next week at the national Poetry Out Loud finals in Washington D.C.
