| ArtsEd Washington Update - Arts Education Week Wrap-up; Principals' Program spaces still available |
|
Thanks to all who attended our Annual Meeting "Making it Real" - on Tuesday May 15th Arts Leadership Program Update
As the school year draws to a close, we want to update you on the amazing work happening in our Principal Arts Leadership schools. Ten new schools, representing seven districts joined the Principals’ Program in January. With the guidance of our School Coach, MaryJane Fraser, all of the new schools have developed an arts plan that will be implemented next year. The plans focus on providing professional development in the arts, curriculum, and ways in which to share arts learning with the community. Plan highlights include: adoption of a school-wide visual arts curriculum, restructuring of planning time so that specialists and classroom teachers can create integrated lessons together, and enrollment of teachers in Arts Impact, a two-year teacher training program in the arts. Program Manager Carri Campbell recently had the opportunity to visit Saltar’s Point Elementary in the Steilacoom Historical School District for their Arts Gala. Saltar’s Point is one of ArtsEd Washington’s new planning schools and a school graduating from the Arts Impact program. Throughout the evening, students’ learning in the arts was illuminated for parents and community members. Presentation included vignettes from pioneer life, an African trickster story told with music, a Japanese dance, theatre improvisations, and two fairy tale dramatizations. All visual artwork was displayed with the aligned Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements and the specific art concepts taught so that the guests were aware of the depth of learning. It is exciting to see these schools become leaders in the arts! Congratulations to the following schools "graduating" into our Alumni program next year: Helen Stafford Elementary, Tacoma; Elk Plain School of Choice and Evergreen Elementary, Bethel; Redmond Elementary, Lake Washington; Southwood Elementary, Enumclaw; Saltar's Point, Steilacoom, and Gordon, Wolfle and Breidblik Elementaries - all from North Kitsap. Of course, behind every great school is a great principal, and these school communities are very fortunate to have such excellent leaders. Looking for a Few (More) Great Instructional Leaders! We have just a few places left for principal leaders in next year's program. If you have spent the last few years wondering when you'll have a chance to get to the arts - the time is now! This program provides the vehicle to enable you and your teachers to intentionally plan to include the arts, engage your community in the effort and enhance teaching and learning in your school. But don't just take our word for it! Click the Principals' Program link on our homepage to see the other schools that have been participating. Maybe you know the principals in some of these schools - give one of them a call or emailcarri@artsedwashington.org for more information. Every Child. More Arts. Arts Education Week Wrap-up Washington’s 2nd Annual Arts Education week was a great success. Many of you utilized the new Arts Education Week toolkit and helped us advance and celebrate arts education throughout the week! Events big and small, local and statewide trumpeted their connection to Arts Education Week and helped raise the profile of arts education in the community. OSPI's Superintendent's Art Show displayed the Arts Education Week logo and award-winning student artists were photographed beside it. Other highlights included Franklin High School’s 5th annual Arts Festival, Globalicious 2007-Seattle International Children’s Festival, and the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra Showcase Concert. In addition, Barnes and Noble stores and Seattle Children’s Theatre helped us to raise the profile of arts education and connect with the greater community by offering story drama sessions at four locations. These types of events help make a case for arts education and we appreciate your participation. In addition to Governor Gregoire's statewide proclamation, the cities of Seattle and Redmond also proclaimed Arts Education Week, with Mayor Ives reading her proclamation aloud at the May 15th Redmond City Council meeting. We applaud these community leaders for their help in raising awareness about the value of arts education. Together, we can help ensure the arts are part of a complete education for all.
If your organization, school or district didn’t participate this year, don’t worry - you'll have another chance! Mark Your Calendars Now - Arts Education Week will be May 12-18th, 2008! | Legislative Update - News from Washington D.C. by Gretchen Johnston, Treasurer (Executive Director, Washington State Arts Alliance) |
|
The News from Washington D.C.
Currently the House of Representative is considering the federal budget and there is very good news so far for arts and arts education.
On May 23rd The House Interior Subcommittee, under the leadership of Washington State 6th District Congressman Norm Dicks, approved a $35 million increase for the NEA in its FY 2008 spending bill. This amount, if approved by the Senate and signed by the president, would be the largest increase in the history of the agency. The agency, currently funded at $124.4 million has only seen increases of less than 3% for the last several years On June 7th the House Labor-Health-Education Appropriations Subcommittee approved a $39 million funding level for the Arts in Education program at the U.S. Department of Education. This is the first time in seven years that this program has received funding from the House subcommittee. In previous years this funding was added in the Senate version of the budget and subsequently agreed to by the House. If this level of funding holds it would represent a slight increase to FY 2007 level of $35.3 million. Final House votes on these budgets will happen any day now. Please go to our Action Alert Center http://capwiz.com/artsusa/wa/state/main/?state=WA There you will find the tools you need to contact your Members of Congress and ask them to support this funding.
