Letter from the President

Dear Friends and Members of ArtsEd Washington;

I’m writing my annual play with the students from The Center School. I’m looking to the Greeks for my inspiration and I’ve been thinking a lot about our girl Pandora. You know, the curious one who just couldn’t resist opening that stupid box and releasing all that evil? After all that yucky stuff got out, there was one thing left clinging to the side of the box: hope. Scholars debate whether that makes hope a good thing—an antidote to all the trouble—or a bad thing—what was hope doing in that bad box to begin with? Kind of a guilt-by-association thing. While I will admit to a penchant for wearing rose-colored glasses and making some BIG pitchers of lemonade, I happen to think hope is a good thing. In this time of caucuses and renewed political debates and discussions about the future of our nation, I think hope is such an essential element of what motivates and sustains us, even through the toughest of times.

I am sincerely grateful for the hope ArtsEd Washington has bred in me. When I began as a board member some 5 or 6 years ago now, I was one of those people who would throw up her hands about education in general, let alone arts education, and intone: “Some things will never change.” I didn’t want to be so cynical and I did continue to do good work with students, but it all seemed like such a small effort in the face of such a huge problem. My work with ArtsEd Washington has given me a chance to see the bigger picture, and to realize that I CAN make an impact. By banding together, we are making progress—particularly when we work collaboratively, supporting one another and our students. All of our students across the state.

Without being too Pollyanna (see above for my lemonade recipe), I want each of you to feel that sense of hope and the ability—the power—to make a difference in our schools and in our communities. Reading this newsletter is a good start. In it, you will find news of tangible steps forward that I hope will inspire you.

Becoming a member of ArtsEd Washington (if you haven’t already) is another important step you can take. Your membership not only provides ArtsEd Washington with crucial dollars to support its work in the field, but also strengthens its voice at the tables where decisions about arts education are made. As a member, you'll also get a priority invitation to our Annual Meeting, tentatively scheduled for Monday, May 5.

ArtsEd Washington is here to help you make a difference. We’re also here to help when you feel the cold nip of cynicism and helplessness overwhelming hope. For myself, I am more committed than ever to making the world a better place starting with our schools, now that I am a mom to Ulysses and Finnegan (who recently turned 7 months old). If you ever needed proof that the arts are an integral part of our human selves, you should come by my house in West Seattle and watch those boys bust a move as soon as music comes on.

Take care, hope for great things and take action on those hopes for more arts in our schools — the universe will hear you.

Andrea Allen, Board President

P.S. If you want to see how my play turns out, come by Seattle Rep in May!

ArtsEd Washington Update
School Teams gather for Arts Planning Workshop
Last month, nine elementary school principals and their Arts Leadership Teams gathered at the Tacoma Art Museum
to envision and create a new plan for integrating the arts into their schools.

Teams discussed the value of arts education and how they will share that in their communities; they heard from Alumni principals currently implementing their arts plans and sharing ideas and strategies for getting started on their goals; and inspired by an engaging presentaion from Eric Liu, they considered the role of the State Board of Education in ensuring a complete education for all students. Then each team began work on their school's unique arts plan, addressing how they will bring their school’s arts instruction to the next level.

We offer special thanks to this year’s school teams: Dickinson Elementary and Juanita Elementary (Lake Washington), Westwood Elementary (Enumclaw), East Hill Elementary (Kent), Eagle Rock Multi-Age Program (Riverview), Centennial Elementary (Bethel), Larchmont Elementary and Birney Elementary (Tacoma), East Port Orchard Elementary (South Kitsap).

Our Schools Coach, Mary Jane Fraser, will visit these schools soon to help refine their arts plans and prepare for their implementation work next year. Special thanks to our Principals’ Program Manager, Gail Frasier, for a well-planned workshop and invigorating, creative activities.

Our grateful appreciation also to our excellent hosts at Tacoma Art Museum - it's always a pleasure to visit this jewel of a museum! Learn more about TAM's education programs at http://www.tacomaartmuseum.org.

If you would like to learn more, or if you are a principal who would like to participate, please email info@artsedwashington.org  or call (206) 441-4501. Click this link http://www.artsedwashington.org/Programs/PALI.html for our program overview.

ArtsEd Washington's Policy Update

State News - Legislators Express Growing Interest in Arts Education

Prior to the start of session, a group of State Legislators made a visit to one of our Alumni schools, observing arts instruction in several classrooms and participating in a 4th grade lesson that infused music, dance, and math learning. The event was hosted by Parkwood Elementary in Shoreline, where Principal Laura Ploudré has been engaged in our Principals' Program since its inception. She has led a committed staff in developing and implementing a strong arts plan and teachers are providing consistent arts instruction, both direct and infused, to ensure a meaningful and engaging learning environment for all students.

After observing the "arts learning in action", legislators led by Senator McAuliffe, Chair of the Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee, talked to Laura and other Alumni principals - Doug Poage from Carnation Elementary (Riverview) and Susan Arbury, Southwood Elementary (Enumclaw) - about how they are weaving the arts into their schools' core instruction and the systems and supports needed to ensure this learning opportunity for all Washington's students. Our thanks to Senators McAuliffe and McDermott, and Representative Maralyn Chase for their attendance and interest.

Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee - Briefing on Arts Education
During the first week of session, the Senate Education Committee held a work session on arts education. ArtsEd Washington's Executive Director, Una McAlinden, was invited to provide an overview of the research supporting both the need and the value of this core subject. The committee heard about a range of strategies for connecting schools with the arts education resources within their communities. Principals Doug Poage and Laura Ploudré shared their personal perspectives about the impact that arts learning is having in their schools and the need to provide arts instruction in all our schools, statewide. Linda Luebke, Parkwood's music teacher, illustrated this need with stories of the students that the arts have touched in her classroom, and she made an impassioned plea for this opportunity to be given to all our kids. Thank you Doug, Laura, Susan and Linda for your powerful advocacy!

ArtsEd Washington's Congressional Visits in the "other" Washington
ArtsEd Washington plans to keep this momentum going and later this month will discuss arts education issues at the federal level with the Washington State Congressional delegation. Executive Director, Una McAlinden, with Board Members Mike Sandner and Lynn Eisenhauer, will be attending the Kennedy Center's National Partnerships Conference and have arranged to make some visits on the hill while in D.C. Also attending and participating are Mike Merrin, Principal of Elk Plain School of Choice in Bethel, Linda Belt of Puyallup School District and Luke Smiraldo from the Broadway Center in Tacoma who are all members of the Washington Partners for Education group.

We'll express our thanks for the considerable increase Congress provided to the National Endowment for the Arts, through which support is provided to many of our state's cultural organizations and will urge them to restore the Department of Education's Arts Education grants budget - yet again zeroed out by the President. We will also pass along the concerns we hear from many of you about the impact No Child Left Behind has had in narrowing the curriculum. We will ask them to ensure that the need for arts instruction is considered as the reauthorization is discussed.

New Data Shows Strong Voter Support for Arts in Education
A new poll recently released by the Arts Education Partnership and Lake Research Partners shows exciting evidence of voter support for arts in education. The survey revealed that almost nine out of ten respondents said that arts education is essential to cultivate imagination, and that imagination is a necessary component to success in the global economy. “These data show a large population we call the ‘imagine nation’ are hungry for imagination in education,” said Celinda Lake, president of Lake Research Partners, “and [they] are going to take action accordingly—both in their local schools and at the voting booth.” To learn more, please visit http://www.theimaginenation.net

ArtsEd Washington is studying the data to see how it can help us all develop effective messages for our elected officials. Watch for more in future newsletters.

Washington State Arts Commission Update by Lisa Jaret, Board member and Arts in Education Program Manager, WSAC
February Updates from Washington State Arts Commission / Arts in Education Program:

Arts in Education – Grant Application Deadlines for FY09
The updated guidelines and application forms have been posted for our two Arts in Education grants: the Community Consortium grant, which has a deadline of February 27, and the First Step grant, with a deadline of March 21. I am happy to answer questions and review application drafts, as long as there is enough lead-time prior to the deadline. To access the application info, go to http://www.arts.wa.gov/education/index.shtml

Governor’s Arts Award for Arts Education
This year, for the first time, the Governor’s Arts Awards included a special category for Arts Education, and it was wonderful to see the award go to Michael Sandner, the Director of Arts Education and Curriculum Integration for Bethel School District, and also an active board member of ArtsEd Washington. In a lovely ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion on January 24, “First Gentleman” Mike Gregoire and WSAC Executive Director Kris Tucker presented the awards to Michael and six other award recipients. Never missing an opportunity to advocate for arts education, Michael used some time in his brief acceptance speech to present a book on the importance of arts education to the First Gentleman. Way to go, Mike!

Poetry Out Loud
High Schools in Pierce, Thurston, Yakima, and Spokane counties are participating this year in Poetry Out Loud, the national poetry recitation contest for high school students. Regional finals for each county are taking place this month: Feb. 5 for Thurston, Feb. 7 for Pierce and Spokane, and Feb. 24 for Yakima. The Poetry Out Loud State Final will be held on Saturday, March 1, 11am-4pm, at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Following the state finals, there will be a special added event: a performance by Taylor Mali, a four-time national poetry slam winner and passionate educator. The entire event on March 1 is free and open to the public; for more information, please email me at lisaj@arts.wa.gov

A Spotlight on Teaching Artists
I’m very pleased to share the news that the greater Seattle area will be included in a national study about teaching artists, called the Teaching Artist Research Project (TARP). This is a project of the Center for Arts Policy at Columbia College Chicago, and is being made possible through the support of a variety of funding partners, including 4Culture, the Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, WSAC, and others. TARP’s intent is to gather data about teaching artists – who they are; where and how they do their best work; etc. – and use that information to suggest practices and policies that will better support the work of teaching artists, and the lives of the teaching artists themselves. I will provide updates on TARP through this eNews as the project moves forward.

As always, I welcome questions and comments about WSAC's Arts in Education programs. I can be reached at (360) 586-2418 or lisaj@arts.wa.gov -- Lisa Jaret, Arts in Education Program Manager, WSAC

Update from AnnRené Joseph, Program Supervisor, The Arts, OSPI

February 2007,

Dear Arts Educators and Advocates,

Washington State is experiencing a Renaissance in Arts Education across the state. In the midst of budget challenges and a focus on math and science, arts education is essential, core, academic, and part of state and federal law as basic education for all students in Washington State. Dance, music, theatre, and visual arts are core academic subject areas in Washington State as defined by the state in 2002, per the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) mandate. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to be in many of your audiences to celebrate the unique, amazing, rigorous, creative, and innovative ways that you offer and promote arts education 24/7 for all learners – birth to life - across our beautiful state.

The update will give you an overview of some of the key initiatives and projects that the OSPI Arts Program is working on with multitudes of partners and stakeholders to continue in the development of a systemic statewide structure to develop, sustain, grow, and celebrate arts education for all learners as essential to the “well rounded education of the whole child.” Arts education provides the necessary concepts and skills needed for the 21st-century citizen! Legislative Update
Mary Langholz (Washington State Arts Alliance)

Hello, ArtsEd colleagues!

Olympia Update
As January turns to February, we find ourselves in the middle of the 60-day, 2008 state legislative session. For those of us who work in or support arts education, this is the time of the year when our voices need to remind our legislators of the importance of arts in our schools and communities. Although it may seem intimidating to contact a state senator or representative, it really is what our democratic system is all about. State legislators need and want to hear from their constituents. During this time, WSAA sends out several “Action Alerts” to arts advocates regarding action on issues that need immediate response. Our first alert this session regarded House Bill 2500 and Senate Bill 6314.

Una and her team of writers prepared the messages that we distributed. Thank you for your good work in responding to this alert. Your messages have made a huge difference in Olympia. However, the session isn’t over and we still have much to do. You can visit the WSAA website at http://www.wsartsalliance.com and click through the action alerts listed. Your participation is greatly appreciated by your ArtsEd colleagues and, of course, all K-12 students across the state.

Arts Day is February 19

For information on how to further show your support to the legislators, please join other arts colleagues on Arts Day 2008 on February 19 at the Capitol Building in Olympia. In addition to meeting with your district senators and representatives or aides, there will be a program at noon in the Rotunda that includes the reading of Governor Gregoire’s Arts Day 2008 Proclamation, presentations by legislators, and readings by our new WA State Poet Laureate, Samuel Green. Visit the WSAA website http://www.wsartsalliance.com for more information. We hope you’ll join us as an effective advocate for the arts!

Save the Date(s) for the Cultural Congress
Don't miss the chance to attend the Cultural Congress 2008, a popular three-day arts conference at Sleeping Lady Mountain Retreat near Leavenworth, WA, scheduled for April 28-30 this year. More details on the WSAA website.

Best regards, Mary Langholz

INTIMAN Theatre Presents the Second Ruben Van Kempen Arts Educator Award
INTIMAN Theatre will present educator, director, and actor Thomas J. Armitage with its Ruben Van Kempen Arts Educator Award at the Theatre’s Annual Meeting on March 17. INTIMAN inaugurated this biennial award (which is named for its first recipient) in 2006 to honor performing arts teachers who help make the world a better place through their contributions to arts education and our community.

Armitage, the second recipient, is the Director of Theatre at North Central High School in Spokane, where he has taught and directed more than 50 plays and musicals since joining the faculty in 1979. Armitage was nominated for the honor by his former student Benjamin Stuart, who praised the unique production experiences he offers students, as well as his commitment to celebrating invention, creativity, and life.

Current and former students and colleagues are encouraged to contribute testimonials, thank-you's, memories or anecdotes, for a collection being organized in tribute to Armitage’s achievements as an educator and his career in the arts. Testimonials should be sent to thankyouarmo@gmail.com; the deadline to send submissions is Monday, March 31. For more information, visit http://www.intiman.org

Seattle Center Academy - Applications due by Friday, May 16
Seattle Center Academy is a unique, two-week arts program for 7th and 8th graders held Monday through Friday, July 28 – August 8. Students explore their creative interests through hands-on experience in the arts: they act, sing, dance, paint, sculpt, draw cartoons, play guitar, produce videos and radio programs, write songs and poetry, design the next fashion trends, and make new friends. Congressman Adam Smith's Art Show - Call for Entries
Every year, members of the U.S. Congress are allowed to display one piece of artwork by a high school student from their district in the U.S. Capitol for one year. To determine which piece of art from the 9th Congressional District receives this honor, U.S. Representative Adam Smith will hold his annual judged arts competition on Saturday, May 10, at the Tacoma Art Museum. Entries will be accepted from March 1 to April 4 in Rep. Smith’s district office in Tacoma, and will be on display at the Museum during the month of May. The selected student will win a $5,000 a year renewable scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and be invited to attend the opening ceremony on Wednesday, June 25, in Washington, D.C. For more information about the competition, please visit Rep. Smith’s website at http://www.house.gov/adamsmith/students/art.shtml

The Art of the Web
Online student art galleries are a win-win situation: Student artwork is highly visible and accessible, and districts don’t have to spend much to get started. Several school districts, including the Bellevue SD, have benefited from this new method of art presentation. “Publishing art online is a great way to emphasize the value of student work and display what we do as educators,” says Lisa Crubaugh, Bellevue’s Art Curriculum Director.
