State Board of Education Passes CORE 24
with Two Arts Credits

We are thrilled to announce that, at their meeting yesterday in Vancouver, the State Board of Education passed their CORE 24 framework for new high school graduation requirements, opening the door for all students to take two arts credits to secure their diploma. ArtsEd Washington Executive Director Una McAlinden praised the State Board’s leadership and vision: “In passing the CORE 24 framework with two arts credits, our State Board has confirmed their commitment to a world-class education system in Washington State that recognizes the arts as essential to a student’s success in school, work, and life.”

As a member of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, ArtsEd Washington has kept leaders at the national level informed about the CORE 24. In a recent letter to the State Board Directors, Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser praised the proposal, and emphasized the way that CORE 24’s two arts credits can help set a new national standard for equitable access to the arts.

Here at home, ArtsEd Washington has been working with the Washington State Arts Alliance, the Washington State Arts Commission (WSAC), the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), and many others for more than a decade to achieve this milestone, helping community members and leaders to understand why the arts must be taught to all students.

AnnRené Joseph, OSPI Arts Program Supervisor and state-level Board member of ArtsEd Washington, emphasized the importance of this approved roadmap for education: “This framework is in true support of the well-rounded education of the whole child. Providing all students with this opportunity for deep learning in the arts will prepare them to fulfill their life dreams, both personally and professionally.” To see how the enhanced arts requirements connect to the existing systemic structure around arts learning, please visit http://www.sbe.wa.gov/artsrequirement.html .

Lisa Jaret, WSAC Arts in Education Program Manager and state-level Board member of ArtsEd Washington, was also delighted to see the inclusion of two arts credits in the CORE 24. “This aligns with the Washington State Arts Commission’s commitment to support arts education for all K-12 students – it’s one of the top priorities in our new strategic plan – and we look forward to continuing our partnerships with schools, communities, and arts organizations around the state, as well as with OSPI and ArtsEd Washington, to support these expanded graduation requirements.”

Much work lies ahead to ensure that our state legislators create the funding mechanisms necessary to make the CORE 24 a reality. We know that we can count on you to continue as passionate advocates in the next critical part of this journey.

For today, let’s celebrate our achievements, and thank the State Board for their leadership. Please visit their website for contact information: http://www.sbe.wa.gov/aboutsbe/aboutpages/contact.htm .

It is ArtsEd Washington’s privilege to do this work with all of you. Together, we are advancing arts education for all students.

ArtsEd Washington Update

Just a Few Spaces Left in our Principals' Arts Leadership Program!

Does your elementary school need a new infusion of arts education? Tell your principal about our Principals' Arts Leadership program, designed to guide and support elementary school teams as they develop and implement a multi-year, school-wide arts plan. Each arts plan reflects the individual school’s characteristics, community, and opportunities for growth, and identifies a unique pathway for that school to offer high quality instruction in all four arts disciplines.

We are recruiting a new cadre of principal leaders to participate in this year's program, and we have a few spaces still open! Please contact us if you think your school should be a part of this amazing opportunity to create sustainable arts programming for children, and become part of a rapidly growing network of Principal leaders for arts education.

The impact of this school-wide, long-range arts planning runs deep and wide. Here is what some of our alumni principals say about the program's benefits:

”With the PALI leadership, networking, and support, we’ve been able to meet all of our goals and then some.”

"In light of NCLB, how are you able to reach more kids? You reach that last 20% of kids through the arts - that unfolded for me [through this program.]

“ArtsEd Washington understands where you are, their level of support is much more than other planning processes.”

“Networking with fellow PALI principals is valuable... to share and learn about the arts.”

Americans for the Arts Requests Session Proposals for 2009 Convention in Seattle
Proposals Due August 1
Americans for the Arts' Annual Convention will be held June 17-20, 2009, right here in Seattle. AFTA is now looking for session proposals for their Arts Education track. Proposals are due August 1. Here is a brief description of the next year's Arts Education theme:

What enables (or disables) Arts Education in the classroom is not a phenomenon—it is the product of hundreds of decisions made by legislators, lobbyists, school boards, higher education, parents, district and school employees, and labor unions. From the White House to the school house, hundreds of policy- and decision-makers determine the daily academic experiences of students. What really happens at the local, state, and federal levels to influence decision-makers in regards to arts education? How are administrators and other school personnel supported so that they can ensure arts education is part of a complete education for all students? From the PTA Mom to the Speaker of House who are the authorizing agents in your community who are making a difference for arts education? The 2009 Arts Education Track will illuminate the change agents who make policy decisions possible and shine a bright light on how you too can make a positive difference for arts education.

Please follow this link for full details of proposal requirements and to complete the on-line submission form http://www.artsusa.org/events/2009/convention/001.asp
