"The Washington State Arts Commission has a strong commitment to arts education, and particularly supports efforts to ensure that the arts are a part of a complete education for all K-12 students in our state. This is a key goal in our strategic plan. Learning in and through the arts enhances both personal and academic success in many ways, and the professional arts community has an important role to play in partnering with schools and community organizations to improve arts education opportunities. We are proud to be a lead partner in presenting Arts Education Week, and encourage educators, artists, parents, and community leaders around the state to join together to recognize the great value of arts education for all students."

"The Arts are an essential part of public education. From dance and music to theatre and the visual arts, The Arts give children a unique means of expression, capturing their passions and emotions, and allowing them to explore new ideas, subject matter, and cultures. They bring us joy in every aspect of our lives.
Arts education not only enhances students’ understanding of the world around them, but it also broadens their perspective on traditional academics. The Arts give us the creativity to express ourselves, while challenging our intellect. The Arts integrate life and learning for all students and are integral in the development of the whole person.
The Arts communicate and speak to us in ways that teach literacy and enhance our lives. We must continue to find a place for arts programs and partnerships not only for what it teaches students about art, but for what it teaches us all about the world we live in."

“Parents are concerned about the nourishment of their children’s creativity and imagination. Children need the arts to develop their creative talents and discover their abilities in personal and cultural expression. These skills lead to improvements in children’s self-esteem, self-image, and social skills. Additionally, research shows a direct correlation between arts education and increased student achievement in reading, language, and mathematics. Washington State PTA recognizes that the arts are an essential part of basic education. We advocate for improved arts education programs and encourage school districts to integrate the arts into their curriculum, programs, and activities. Washington State PTA proudly supports Arts Education Week, May 14-20, 2007.”
Washington State PTA will be promoting Arts Education Week on their listserve and at the Reflections Arts Recognition Ceremony at their statewide convention on May 6th. |
