Americans for the Arts Knowledge Exchange:
District-Wide Change in Arts Education
Los Angeles County, CA / October 27-28, 2008

Too often teachers alone are expected to provide arts education when in fact elected school leaders, administrators, district staff, principals, arts organizations, and funders play important roles in high-quality, highly accessible arts education. Los Angeles County's successful initiative, Arts for All, is a series of policy changes and educational initiatives intended to institutionalize sequential K-12 arts education in Los Angeles County school districts. Arts for All has continuously evaluated, refined, and improved the initiative over the past seven years. The methods, expertise, tools, evaluation, and research that results from this work will provide a context for a broader conversation on district and community infrastructure for arts education. Participants will leave Los Angeles with an understanding of what infrastructure is necessary to provide arts education, the coalition necessary to build it, and how to take the first step and each step thereafter.
